Blog Assignment #12

Hi All,

This week is pre-crit week. That means, the schedule for posts are accelerated. You should post your work and comment on each other’s post within your class by the start of class on Thursday.

317

Post your designs to the blog. I should have at least 8 different images of pages for each student. You are to review everyone’s post and comment on their designs so far. Talk about the design, the function. Does the shopping cart make sense? How do you anticipate people buying items from your site? Do you feature a product? Are the images large enough? Good space for descriptions, titles, ingredients? Price? Does it stand out?
Does it make sense on the user’s end? Remember the readings you’ve done from Angel, Steven Krug and other resources and sites you’ve visited. In your comments, talk about any issues you may see with the proposed design going forward.
Failure to do means you are not fully participating in class.

Now that you’ve started to add some content and make some changes to the WordPress design structure, what kinds of challenges are you coming across? Post your WordPress install link to the blog and describe what you are having difficultly with. Treat this as a pre-crit of sorts. Maybe someone else in the class has found a resource or way to do exactly what it is you are trying to do?

Blog Assigment #11

Hi All,

This week is a reading assignment for 317 and a statement for 417.

317

Read chapters 1, 2 and 3 in the “Don’t Make Me Think” book by Steven Krug. Respond to what he says we do as designers, and how he feels we should be designing going forward with the web. He makes many good points as to why we should make the obvious even more obvious, and to make people guess less as they interact with websites. What do the points he makes say to you as the designer of sites? as the user of sites?

From there, I want you to provide a screen shot and a link on a good e-commerce site you’ve found in your research for Project 3. Tell me why the design is good, how the functionality works in terms of getting users to look at products, make selections and adding the item to their cart. How do you think this will influence your design for Project 3?

This week, I want you to post your creative brief on the blog. You should address all of the areas that are outlined on the creative brief document.

That’s All

WordPress Site

Looking through WordPress sites, I noticed a lot of them are very visually dynamic which I like. Many of them incorporate image in these really interesting ways and they’re just really nice to look at. The site above is one that I really liked and something I’d like to base my site off of. Although this is not as visually engaging as sites I’ve seen, what I really liked about this site is the middle section that spans across and is a kind of slideshow. I think it’s a really neat way to showcase certain things on the site and I also like how it’s directly in the center with content beneath it. The texture the site uses is also something that I really liked. It just added so much more to it without being overbearing – and also gives it this so of torn paper look. It’s really a great way to grab attention quickly. I think if I were to use this type of slideshow section for my site, however, I wouldn’t put content below but instead just have a navigation bar – as the site does at the top – that would take the users to the content of the site and maybe even keep the middle section to serve as a backdrop for content. I’d also add in a lot more color too. I can see why this site doesn’t have much color since it’s an online newspaper but I think that whole middle section could be so much more dynamic with color.

Blog Assignment #10

Hi All,

Blog assignment for this week is about your projects…

317

Now that you have constructed your first website, talk about some of the challenges you faced in your build-out. Did you have issues with floating columns, images? Linking from page to page? Maintaining consistency throughout your site with CSS?

Tell me how you problem solved your issues in building your website. Remember to post a link to your completed site along with a screen capture of the porject.

417

Start looking into some WordPress based sites that you find around the internet. I googled “WordPress Based Websites” and pulled up a few links for you to peruse.

Look at what these example sites can do with WordPress. You can go and search on your own for particular topics that could be WordPress based. Get some inspiration

Give me a link to a site that you feel you’d like your Project 3 to be. Talk about how they showcase certain items, features, images, content. What makes this site special in your mind? How are you inspired by how the site is treated as a whole?

That’s All,
Devin
