Great learning experience

I know it is very late, but I think I want to post this. As you know, I am an international student. I never took a web design or design course before. and this web design class is one of the class I am looking for at HCI.

I have learned a lot, and surprisingly according to the things I want to learn before. I never make a mobile site before and ever wondered how to develop a mobile website, and the first assignment got it for me to learn about it. It was just at the right moment.

Second assignment was about how to redesign a website for me. As HCI student, website redesign is one of good skill to learn -and right now it looks like the trend is how to redesign a website. Smashing Book 3 by Smashing magazine that just released bringing up this “Redesign” as the baseline of the book. And not to forget second assignment was about grid system -which is also one the thing I wanted to learn.

Last assignment, of course, this was also one of the things I wanted to learn : make a wordpress theme from scratch. I have made a worpdress website before, but I was using a framework and most of them modifying CSS. The results turned out not really good. That was why I want to learn how to made a worpress theme.

Oh, also JQuery. I wanted to learn that too. and now I already have experience about it.

For me, it was an impressive class as three things I want to learn was covered in my progress in the class. Also the critique was one of my new experience. I never done that before and it would say it was enriching.

I want to thanks everyone and also especially Devin, It was fun and enriching class. I come from a country where web industry is starting to shine getting more attention. Get taught in a class by a professional web designer in US, where the web industry is already great, is one of the experience I won’t forget..

I think that is all from me.

Warm regards,
Gyl

I learned a lot.

So it was fun.

I don’t really want to list everything I learned because I’m lazy and tired.

I will say that I had a great time in this class, I learned exactly what I wanted to from this class. I am completely comfortable going out and knowing how to learn what I need. The class was perfect in preparing me to not get overwhelmed by not knowing what I was doing. I can now troubleshoot, and discover things on my own and that is what I wanted to leave this class with.

Devin, you are a great professor, I’m glad to have been able to take both 3 and 417 with you. You are the reason I am now looking into a career in Web Design; I’m sure there was an alternate reality where I would have ended up hating web if it weren’t for you. I’m sure I’ll be able to keep in contact with you. I just wanted to say thank you for everything you’ve done, you put so much effort into these classes, I know I’m not the only one who really appreciates it. We will miss you here.

Class is done, and I learned so much; CSS3, WordPress, and jQuery are my friends now.

Thanks everyone,

Cam Bruhns

Learning from 417

This semester in web I feel that I was opened to a lot more possibilities of the web in terms of coding and structure. I was really surprised going from 317 in the fall semester to 417 this semester just how much more you can do with web.

In this class in particular, I feel that I further developed in using CSS. Previously, I didn’t pay much attention to the CSS and focused on HTML. Now I know that CSS is what really drives every aspect of a website and I feel much more comfortable with it after this class since all of our projects focused on using it. I also feel becoming more acquainted with CSS and beginning to the use of jQuery has definitely pushed the designs of my sites to be more appealing and dynamic, and will also use this to my advantage in further projects. I really enjoyed learning about jQuery and the possibilities that can provide as well – it’s something that I found is really useful in creating a smooth, appealing site in all aspects including buttons and image display.

Another thing that I learned, and also struggled with, was the different types of structures there is available for making websites. For example, our second project we used the grid systems – I used the 960. At first I really struggled with using this, which I think was due to the fact that I was in a way stuck on what I had learned in 317. I wasn’t used to the set structure of building a website this way. However, as I got used to it I realized that it was actually really helpful in providing organization and eliminating unnecessary code. The final site in WordPress was also a struggle for me – using the structure of a set theme and pulling it apart to add in my own things. I think for this project the structure caught me off guard, but I had more trouble with the PHP aspect of it all. I do see how WordPress can be really useful, however, as I continue with finishing my site. It’s just taking a lot of getting used to and figuring things out.

Overall, I feel that I’m more developed in web designing. I now know that there is a lot of possibilities to develop a design in terms of CSS, jQuery, etc. I enjoyed learning to use these aspects and hope to further develop them in the future – as well as my WordPress skills since I know that can be really valuable. I also feel that I’m better at troubleshooting on my own since I’ve had many issues during the process of creating my sites – so in the process of navigating these issues myself I think it helped me to become better acquainted with Dreamweaver, CSS, etc. Web is challenging but overall I have enjoyed it and hope to pursue it and continue to learn more.

What I learned

Well besides for relearning web design all over again, I’ve come to realize I’m not as bad at web as I thought I was. I understand the use of div tags more, float-left and right, etc. especially in the Coffee mobile project where I had to do a lot of that for the navigation. I feel like in Art 317 all I did was go through the motions of making a site without fully understanding what I was doing. I learned php and how to format a form in the coffee website and use iframes too. I found it surprising all the things you can use, like css generators and jquery, to make your site more efficient and different. I feel like I can make my portfolio site (cmykarina.com) better than it is now with these sort of things.

Blog Assignment #13

Hi All,

This will be your last blog assignment as the semester wraps up.

317 & 417 & 517

Talk about what it is you got from your semester learning web design. Was it that you learned about the coding side of web? Was it that you learned how to design for the web? Was it that you further refined some skills? Cite specific examples of projects, techniques and such that you have learned.

The goal for this class in my view wasn’t that it was just about the technology. It’s an important part of the picture to achieve your overall goal. What I want you to take from this class is the research, strategy and design portions as well. Any successful website is about taking those pieces and assembling them into a vision.

Remember, your final is Thursday at 6pm in Lanigan 35. Make sure your files are uploaded to Rocky, and that you create an alias to your site, and file share your final project to your respective Dropbox folders.

That’s All
Devin

My Website

Well, I am kind of forgot to post my link here. I am still having problem with design, more on indecisive about website. For WordPress itself, sometimes I am still having problem with the WordPress codex itself; I ever developed a website using WordPress, but did not make a theme from scratch.

Art 317 PreCrit – Comic Gob Cafe!

Here is my design layout for the bakery website.  I wanted to do something a little different and wanted to work with whoopie pies as my product.  as you can see I am going for a comic book typed theme.  I was having one problem figuring out what I wanted as the main navigation bar. Suggestions?

WordPress Precrit

I’m actually having a lot of trouble with this. When Devin was explaining it in class I thought oh well this shouldn’t be hard at all. But, when it came time to actually working on mine and outside of class I felt lost. My main problem really is getting the content into the site. I’m having trouble changing things like headings and just putting any text into my pages at all. The PHP is really losing me too so I’m still trying to get used to navigating that. Also one of my @fontfaces isn’t working so that why the navigation text is still Times. In general there’s just a lot of technical things I need to work out with this site but I’m most concerned about getting the content there, even if it’s doesn’t fully mimic my original design. I feel like if I get to this point, I’ll be able to gradually figure the rest out.

Completely lost

My challenges this week are basically everything. I don’t understand the translation from html to php. I don’t know what php file to go to to change something, and even if I do find the right one I don’t know where to go from there. I would have asked for help Tuesday night but my portfolio site for 414 is due today and I’ve been pulling my hair out over that.
